Despite a bit of holiday radio silence, a lot of work has been done with the album over the last few weeks. Phase two of the album has been pretty involved … lots of tracking and picking the best takes, and even a little bit of rewriting in a couple cases.
I came to the realization earlier today that this album is, in a sense, already aged. Apart from “For My Favorite”, the songs that make up this album are mostly from 2013. I guess that left me scratching my head and asking myself, “What happened in 2014?”
“Lots of crap, Jack.”
After years of really not analyzing my own living patterns and how my art relates, I have discovered that when things are tougher I simply shut down creatively. Just after I lost my job in the early part of last year, I had a brief flurry of activity but it was mostly pairing up old lyrics to new songs. Then as it started to pick up in the Fall, I started recording this album but also got a really bad case of bronchitis. I suppose those two things (along with adjusting to a new career) did me in.
But you know what? It’s a new year.
I’m not sure exactly when, but there will be a new single very soon. Harry, J.D., and I all agree that “Texas Can’t Have You Back” has the perfect vibe for a single, and I’ll probably pair it with “For My Favorite” – both are about my darling dearest.
